The Fools are back with our summer tour of outdoor spaces across the region and we are seeking some special people to join our happy team. Most positions involve a combination of technical proficiency, outdoor physical work in multiple locations, some office work, and interactions with the general public.  We provide training and excellent work experiences for those interested in careers in event management or the arts.

Pay Rate: $17/hour at 35 hours/week. Contract dates vary with each position.

Production Assistant

a Company of Fools is seeking a paid full time Production Assistant to participate as a crew member on our Shakespeare-in-the-park production of The Tempest. Candidates must meet the requirements for Canada Summer Jobs consideration (age 15-30).

Contract Dates: June 13th – August 13th (avg. 35 hours/week)

Pay Rate: $17.00/hour

Production Assistant Duties include:

  • Assist Production Manager in scheduling, budgeting, and financial management 
  • Source materials required for set, prop and costume builds
  • Renting vehicles and equipment 
  • Distribution of promotional materials to local community associations 
  • Nightly setup and tear down of Torchlight stage

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Production Manager’s role in a professional theatre setting
  • Experience in event management
  • Experience creating and managing project budgets
  • Familiarization with Ottawa theatre companies and practices
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Sense of humour

Considered Assets (not required):

  • Familiarity with a Company of Fools and/or pursuit of theatre-related studies 
  • G class driver’s license / access to a vehicle 
  • CPR and/or First Aid Training
  • Police record check

Successful candidates must be available for the entire run, be physically capable of repeated heavy lifting and be able to maintain a professional, positive attitude at all times and in all sorts of summer weather (rain, shine, heat, humidity, cold).

Design Assistant

a Company of Fools is seeking a paid full time Design Assistant to assist our costume and set designers during the rehearsal process for our Shakespeare-in-the-park production of The Tempest. Candidates must meet the requirements for the Ontario Summer Experience program: enrolled in full time studies at a secondary or post secondary school and under the age of 30.

Contract Dates: May 16th – June 30th (avg. 35 hours/week)

Pay Rate: $17.00/hour

Design Assistant Duties include:

  • Assist Production Designers in sourcing and constructing design elements (costume and/or set)
  • Attend weekly production meetings with Designers, Director and Stage Management
  • Assist Production Manager and technicians in nightly setup and teardown of Torchlight stage/set 
  • Repair, maintain, and clean all design elements 

Qualifications:

  • Working understanding of technical drawings and/or costume renderings
  • Working knowledge of scenic carpentry and/or costume construction
  • Familiarization with Ottawa theatre companies and practices
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Sense of humour

Considered Assets (not required):

  • Familiarity with a Company of Fools and/or pursuit of theatre-related studies 
  • G class driver’s license / access to a vehicle

Junior Technician

a Company of Fools is seeking a paid full time theatre technician for our upcoming Shakespeare in the park tour of The Tempest. Candidates must meet requirements for Canada Summer Jobs consideration (age 15-30).

Contract Dates: June 13th – August 13th (avg. 35hrs/wk)

Pay Rate: $17.00/hour

Theatre Technician duties include:

  • Assist Technical Director in all technical tasks involved in mounting a touring production.
  • Daily hands-on work in packing, setting up, operating, tearing down all technical equipment – mostly audio and lighting equipment.
  • Source materials as required.
  • Doing documentation, training others, working as a team member on all show tasks as required.
  • Nightly assistance in setup and tear down of Torchlight stage

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Theatre Technicianr’s role in a professional theatre setting
  • Experience in event management
  • Familiarization with Ottawa theatre companies and practices
  • Well organized and detail oriented
  • Sense of humour

Apprentice Stage Manager

a Company of Fools is seeking a paid full time Apprentice Stage Manager to join us for rehearsals and tour of our Shakespeare-in-the-park production of The Tempest.

Contract Dates: May 23rd – August 13th (avg. 35 hours/week)

Pay Rate: $17.00/hour

Apprentice Stage Manager duties include:

The Apprentice will shadow the company’s Stage Manager during rehearsals, learning the role of a professional stage manager working under the Canadian Theatre Agreement.  The Apprentice may be called upon to fill in for the stage manager on occasion, and they will undertake a crew role while on tour.  The Apprentice Stage Manager will be registered with Canadian Actors Equity Association and receive an apprentice credit towards joining Canada’s professional association that represents stage managers (at company’s cost).

Rehearsal Responsibilities (May 23rd – June 18th):

  • Attend weekly production meetings and assist the stage manager in taking meeting minutes 
  • Ensure the rehearsal schedule abides by Canadian Theatre Agreement regulations
  • Record all blocking and create annotated staging notes during rehearsals. These notes ensure there is a written record of the decisions made at each rehearsal.
  • Track all costume changes within the production, notify and assist actors in those changes
  • Track the location of props and ensure proper placement prior to each rehearsal
  • Prompt actors on lines during the rehearsal process
  • Prepare daily rehearsal reports that are distributed to all production departments (costumes, set, props, music).

Tour Responsibilities (June 20th – August 13th)

  • Set up, prepare, take down, and manage an assigned area of responsibility 
  • Provide assistance in costume changes, prop hand-offs, and cueing sound effects
  • Ensure actor safety, notifying them of any changes that arise during a performance (weather or other environment changes)
  • Repair any costume or props that may break during a run of the performance
  • Assist the stage manager in preparing daily show reports that are distributed to all production departments
  • Undertake laundry duties for actor costumes as required (and compensated separately)

Qualifications:

  • Experience, training and motivation for a future professional Stage Manager career

Marketing Assistant

a Company of Fools is seeking a paid full time Marketing Assistant to advertise and promote our Shakespeare-in-the-park production of The Tempest. Candidates must meet the requirements for Canada Summer Jobs consideration (age 15-30).

Contract Dates: June 8th – August 1st (avg. 35 hours/week)

Pay Rate: $17.00/hour

Marketing Assistant duties will all work towards an end-goal of increasing audience numbers, delivering customer satisfaction, and measuring results. The Marketing assistant will observe and assist in all marketing, communications, and public relations responsibilities that go into preparing and executing an outdoor tour of a professional theatre production.

Specific tasks include:

  • Communication with the public through a variety of mediums, including social media and print 
  • Team work with the creative team to understand show concept and how best to market. 
  • Working on site alongside front of house volunteers
  • Client services, in answering patron queries via email, phone, social media or in-person at events. 
  • Website development and maintenance, use of software for graphic design and campaigns
  • Creation of marketing assets
  • Liaison with media outlets
  • Administer and collate in-person audience surveys
  • Evaluate effectiveness of marketing campaigns
  • Assist with nightly shows as required

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge, training and experience in marketing concepts and tools
  • An interest in events, festivals and tourism activities
