ARE TWO FOOLS ARE BETTER THAN ONE?
Ottawa, ON – Self-styled “Big Fool” Scott Florence is leaving A Company of Fools as their 25th Anniversary season winds to a close. Long time Company members AL Connors and Catriona Leger will continue to helm the beloved organization.
When asked what this change would mean for a Company of Fools, Scott said: “The Fools have always been collective team of artist managers, and my colleagues AL Connors and Catriona Leger were always kind enough to let me hog the limelight. My leaving simply means they get to make more speeches at our events.”
Various explanations have been given for the departure of Scott Florence from the Fools. Some say that it was a rehearsal for the ‘War of the Roses’ cycle of history plays (about the bloody fight for the crown of England) that just got out of hand. Others say that a group of concerned citizens is throwing Mr. Florence out of town now that he’s been named one of Ottawa’s top 25 in Ottawa Life magazine crying “no Fool shall make this reverent list!” as they toss him in a ditch.
But the most likely explanation is that he has accepted the position of General Manager at the Sudbury Theatre Centre.
During Scott’s tenure in Ottawa, he has worked with hundreds of local artists, taught thousands of students and performed for tens-of-thousands of audience members. He’s one of the most recognizable personalities in the Ottawa theatre community and has done an immeasurable amount of work for the community at large over the years.
“After 24 years with the Fools, I’ve accomplished everything that I set out to do. That it took me 24 years is probably a good indication that both the Fools and I need a change,” quipped Scott Florence. “I’m proud of the work I’ve done with the Fools here in Ottawa. When I think about it too much, my heart breaks a little that I’m leaving. Fortunately the work at the Sudbury Theatre Centre is going to keep me very busy, and I’m very much looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead for me.”
AL Connors and Catriona Leger were not quite as sanguine. “Scott has been a key part of the Fools for many years, and he leaves very big shoes to fill: Size 17 clown.” says AL. “On the other hand,” shot in Catriona, “if Scott can do the job, then any Fool can do it.” A Goodbye Big Fool – Celebrity Roast of Scott Florence – Fundraiser is planned for Friday November 6 at Arts Court.
The Fools will announce their new season at their annual Twelfth Night Event on January 5th 2016.
