The 10th Anniversary Torchlight Season
a Company of Fools is delighted to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of Torchlight Shakespeare this summer in a big way!
In 2003 the Fools created what has since become our signature event – the annual Torchlight Shakespeare series. This event makes Shakespeare accessible by taking it out of the theatre and into neighbourhood parks each summer, allowing the Fools to bring our unique brand of Shakespeare right to your back yard (or not far from it). In an effort to make great theatre available to everyone regardless of economic background, admittance to Torchlight Shakespeare shows is always by pass-the-hat, pay-what-you-can donations.
This year we will be offering an extended season featuring two productions as well as celebrating in style! Opening night July 3rd has been declared a Company of Fools day in Ottawa – Join us for the DECLARATION and CELEBRATIONS with some Fool-ish colour! We are inviting all audience members to show their Fool-ish spirit on this day by wearing their a Company of Fools garb from seasons past to help celebrate this honour in what we are calling our Colour Me Foolish campaign.
Don’t have a t-shirt? Not to worry! We’ll have plenty of chances for you to win one throughout the month of June so that you’re dressed and ready to go by the time a Company of Fools day rolls around. Impatient? Don’t like to gamble? Not to worry! You can purchase a t-shirt from our office simply by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Or better yet, head over to our donor page and make a donation. Contributions of $100 or more entitle the donor to a Fools t-shirt (on top of a full tax receipt).
But what about the shows?
Yes. Of course! We were just getting to that…
This 10th Anniversary Season is a big deal so why not celebrate it with Shakespeare’s biggest character. Both Torchlight offerings will revolve around the rascally rogue Falstaff: that enormous and well-loved con-man, coward and gad-about-town; grifter, pretender, liar and thief; the Lord of Misrule. Seems fittingly Foolish, doesn’t it?
The Merry Wives of Windsor directed by Catriona Leger kicks off Torchlight Shakespeare’s 10th Anniversary and runs July 3-August 17 in Ottawa’s parks. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, bug spray and a sense of humour. Pay-what-you-can donations are collected at the end of the performance and can be submitted in the form of cash or cheque. A detailed touring schedule can be found here.
The 10th Anniversary festivities will continue well into the fall with Torchlight Too: Hal & Falstaff. This second Torchlight offering is an adaptation of Henry IV pt. 1 & 2 with bits of Henry V and Richard II thrown in and will be adapted and directed by founding Fool Margo MacDonald. This production will tour to three different indoor venues from September 2-22. Tickets will again be by Pay What You Can donation and audiences will have the option to guarantee admittance by booking ahead on Eventbrite.ca for $20 per person.
Both productions will feature the same group of talented artists – some familiar faces to Fools fans and some brand new: Simon Bradshaw, John Doucet, Melanie Karin, Matthew John Lundvall, Geoff McBride and Katie Ryerson. Vanessa Imeson will design costumes and sets for both productions.
